Bejeweled Gift Guide-#2 In our 12 Gifts for the Holidays Series
This season we are lucky enough to have enlisted 12 expert modern designer retailers, antique dealers and shops for our holiday gift guide. For each installment, we have asked for suggestions from their brick and mortar or online stores. We have also asked what gift they would choose for themselves this holiday season.
For our second gift idea, we asked Elizabeth Doyle, co-owner with sister Pam of Doyle & Doyle, one of Manhattan’s premier antique shops. Situated in the heart of the meatpacking district with its brand name fashion shops and new artisan galleries, Doyle & Doyle features an open airy loft like space with high ceilings and warm inviting displays and décor. The shop and online website specialize in all time periods of jewelry starting with the Georgian era through the retro period of the 20th century. Elizabeth also designs pieces that are inspired by the antique and vintage pieces she carries and creates custom bridal jewelry.
Her suggestion for this season’s holiday gift are pendants.
“This is a great category if you want to avoid the tricky pitfalls of some other jewelry types. Rings are generally to be avoided if there is any chance the recipient would like an engagement ring and the one you choose is not one where you will be getting down on one bended knee.In addition, by purchasing pendants, you need not worry if you can’t recall if the recipient has pierced ears. All types and time periods of pendants work well as personal everyday pieces, statement looks, or they can be easily worn layered with other favorites. The fairly simple, yet beautiful Edwardian aquamarine pendant is a great piece for the woman who prefers a more understated necklace; while the Victorian pearl & diamond example is for someone who leans towards ornate styling. I chose these two beauties to illustrated the versatility and range in this category of jewelry for the holidays.”
“As for the gift I would most love to open up a package and find—these amazing Victorian silver topped gold and diamond girandole earrings. For me, the perfect gift is something that I covet, but would probably never buy for myself. These earrings are stunning and totally fit the bill. I would either dress them up with other outstanding jewels or wear them as my one statement piece with more casual fashion. These are definitely for someone who wants to get a lot of wear out of one pair of earrings—which I do. These would be out and about rather than sitting in my jewelry box. I would even wear them to drop my kids off at school, if I’d be lucky enough to receive them from my awesome husband —who I hope is reading this!”
